Online Short Courses

We have a new series of short courses (3 - 5 CE hours) and will continue to expand the number of offerings in this category. The first group of short courses are home study modules that accompany the book Orthopedic Assessment in Massage Therapy. The book is sold separately, but once you have the book, you have the content material for all the courses in this series as well as a valuable clinical reference for your practice. While these courses are shorter in length than our comprehensive orthopedic massage e-learning program, we have put forth great effort to construct the highest quality educational experience and a great value for you.

Courses now available:

  • Assessment Skills 1 (Soft Tissue Injury): 5 CE hours ($48)
    • The foundation of any assessment process is understanding how soft tissues are most commonly injured. This course gives you a thorough grounding in the most common types of soft tissue disorders so you can recognize them appropriately. When you can recognize the nature of a soft-tissue injury you are far better equipped to treat it.
  • Assessment Skills 2 (HOPRS Protocol): 5 CE hours ($48)
    • The HOPRS protocol (History, Observation, Palpation, Range-of-Motion and Resistance Testing, and Special tests) is a systematic method for assessing soft tissue injuries. In this course you will apply your clinical evaluation skills in the HOPRS methods to assess and evaluate various soft tissue injury patterns. This course will really make you think about injury conditions in totally new ways!
  • Median Nerve Entrapment: 4 CE hours ($48)
    • Median nerve entrapment in the distal upper extremity is one of the most common orthopedic neurological disorders. This course covers detailed anatomy and biomechanics of the two most common median nerve entrapments: carpal tunnel syndrome and pronator teres syndrome. Effective treatment of these conditions requires that they are accurately identified. After completion of this course you will have far greater skills and knowledge of how to identify these conditions and construct an appropriate treatment strategy.
Foot Pain: 4 CE hours ($48)
    • Foot pain from chronic overuse can be caused by a number of different pathological conditions. This course focuses on 3 commonly occurring foot pain conditions: plantar fasciitis, Morton's neuroma, and tarsal tunnel syndrome. Through this course you will learn about recognizing and differentiating these disorders because the signs and symptoms for these conditions can be very similar. Accurate identification helps you determine how best to help a client with one of these overuse disorders.

Technical Specifications:

There are some technical specifications you should be aware of that will help you work most effectively with these courses. They are listed below.

  • It is best if you have a high-speed internet connection for the course, although it is not mandatory. We have attempted to keep activities to a minimum that involve large file sizes so those on a dial-up connection will not have long download periods. However, following our initial survey an overwhelming number of respondents stated they had broadband connections, so we want to use those capabilities as well.
  • You should have a version of the Adobe Acrobat Reader so you can view pdf files. If you don’t have Acrobat reader on your computer you can get it as a free download from the Adobe website at: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
  • This course will work best if you are using a moderately new web browser. Please note that if you are on a Mac operating system there are some reported problems with the Safari browser and our course shell software. You are highly encouraged to use Firefox for the Mac as your web browser. These web browser versions should work just fine:
    • Internet Explorer 6 or later
    • Firefox 1 or later
    • Netscape 7 or later
