Finally, massage professionals across the country and internationally will have access to our renowned training program. As an online course, you can take the courses at your own convenience and in your own home, or wherever you have online access.

Over my many years of teaching, I have heard from many professionals who were unable to take our courses because they could not afford to travel or take time off work. Yet, the alternative, poor quality home-study courses offered by others were not what they wanted for their professional development.

OMERI’s e-Learning program provides the most comprehensive training in orthopedic massage available, but is more affordable and more accessible! Professionals, wherever they live or work, are now able to improve their practices, skills, and careers with this innovative program.

In each program we integrate anatomy, kinesiology, and clinical science for rehabilitation practice to help you develop essential skills in recognizing and treating numerous soft-tissue pathologies. The primary course work is delivered through innovative case studies that give you real-life methods to immediately apply what you are learning to your clinical practice.

Orthopedic Massage 1, 2, & 3 are taken in a cohort group (you have classmates that are doing the course with you at the same time during a set 6-week period. Orthopedic Massage 4 (Clinical Skills) is a self-paced online course that you do completely at your own schedule (as long as you finish it within 4 months of starting it). See the Frequently Asked Questions below for more details.

Orthopedic Massage 1: This course covers evaluation and treatment of disorders of the back, neck, & pelvis. We explore conditions such as thoracic outlet syndrome, spinal nerve compression pathologies, piriformis syndrome, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, low back pain, whiplash, and many more.

Orthopedic Massage 2: This course explores evaluation and treatment of conditions such as plantar fasciitis, tarsal tunnel syndrome, patellofemoral pain, tendinosis, shin splints, muscle strains, and many more. Numerous problems throughout the body result from lower extremity disorders because these are our limbs of locomotion. Very few courses address lower extremity issues in this detail and this course will be a great asset to your practice.

Orthopedic Massage 3: The focus of OM3 is upper extremity disorders. We address evaluation and treatment of conditions such as shoulde impingement syndrome, frozen shoulder, rotator cuff tears, tennis elbbow, carpal tunnel syndrome and numerous other upper extremity nerve entrapment syndromes, and many more. The repetitive nature of many occupations has led to an epidemic of upper extremity disorders and this course provides valuable tools to help you address these complaints with your clients.

Orthopedic Massage 4 (Clinical Skills): OM4 is a course designed for those who are taking the Orthopedic Massage Techniques hands-on courses and want to be eligible for the certification exam. All of our online courses are where practitioners learn much more about clinical reasoning and the complexities of identifying conditions and constructing treatment strategies. This course is a self-paced online course that includes topic information from the OM1, 2, & 3 courses mentioned above. You can take this as a stand-alone course, but it is most helpful if you are doing other courses such as the Orthopedic Massage Techniques hands-on workshops.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is e-Learning?
E-Learning is more than simply taking a class online. Recent advances in hardware and software, combined with innovative approaches in learning theory, allow us to offer a completely different type of educational experience than the typical online course. Most online courses require simply reading information and taking multiple-choice tests. This style of course is not effective for providing advanced education, such as the type of learning and clinical reasoning applied in orthopedic massage. The developmental process and learning activities used in our e-learning program provide a far superior learning experience and allow more effective outcomes.

Weekend workshop or e-Learning?
Get more for your money and time . There are serious limitations to the level of in-depth training that can be accomplished in a weekend workshop. Just the amount of information can be overwhelming, making it hard for students to retain much of what they have learned. E-Learning allows the student to take their time integrating material and fully comprehending the information and skills. In addition, students can start and stop at different points to practice or review. There will always be a role for the workshop, however, and we will continue to offer a hands-on element. E-learning is not for everyone, but many people find it an exceptional way to enhance their professional knowledge and skills. The University of Illinois has put together a brief information page that helps you determine if you would be well-suited to the e-learning environment. To take a look at that page just click here.

How does the course work?
It’s easy! The new program format is similar to the workshop series, with three regionally focused segments: back, neck & pelvis; lower extremity; and upper extremity. Participants take the course over a 6-week period, but at times of the day convenient to them. Contact with classmates is maintained by internet discussion boards. Instead of being overloaded with large amounts of lecture material that you are told to memorize, the major learning activities are structured around problem solving approaches embedded within case studies. This allows you to immediately integrate the things you are learning within your clinical practice.

Do I have to be online at a certain time of day?
No.
All learning activities are asynchronous--meaning they do not have to happen at a specific time of day. One of the important factors in making e-learning flexible is that you can work on the program when you are attentive, interested, and at the most receptive for the learning activities.

Massage is more of a hands-on skill. How can you teach that with the computer?
Very well ! Orthopedic massage is not a specific technique. It is a comprehensive rehabilitative science. OMERI’s orthopedic massage has always been an advanced course that emphasizes clinical reasoning and application rather than rote memorization of exact routines or techniques. E-Learning fits our educational approach because participants are provided even more detail and instruction in the more advanced and complex assessment and treatment protocols that make up our orthopedic massage education.

Success working with clients who require more than stress-relief massage, requires the therapist be able to identify pathological conditions, analyze biomechanical factors, and make complex decisions regarding assessment and treatment. These are skills involving critical thinking in rehabilitation science and are very effectively taught with computer learning strategies (when those learning strategies are developed correctly). There are some things that still work best with a face-to-face meeting in the classroom, but there are also things that will work better in the e-learning format. We maximize the student experience so you get the very best possible training available in this format.

Do I have to know a lot about computers?
No. You don’t have to know a lot about computers to do this program. It is user-friendly and simple. Help will be available for questions about the software or interactive activities.

Will I be able to interact with other students?
Yes. Interaction with other students is an important part of the learning process and one of the great experiences about being in a workshop. In most online training programs you are working alone. In this course there are numerous opportunities to interact with other students and with your instructor. Some students may be from your geographical area, but this program has students from all over the country and outside the U.S. as well, so it is a fascinating way to explore dynamics and education in massage therapy with many others.

Is there a way to ask questions while in the midst of the program?
Access is important. Another unique feature of this program is that Whitney is directly involved in all the online course activities. You can always reach him to get clarification about assignments or ask questions about the material you are working on. Previous students have remarked that this is one of the greatest aspects of the course because you have access to Whitney every day for 6 weeks (an opportunity you won't get in any other type of classroom format). Also, by working extensively with other students you can ask questions, hold discussions, and learn a great deal from your fellow classmates.

What if I have already taken some of the certification program courses, but am not finished?
More options! The new program is designed so that you can complete your certification with the e-Learning option or finish with one of the workshop courses.

What does the course cost?
The program is even more affordable than traditional workshops! Without travel costs and time away from work the cost ($350) is actually lower than our workshop courses. If you look at the amount of instructional time in this course (40 CE hours) compared to other workshops, you see that its cost is a great value!
