Frequently Asked Questions

What is e-Learning?

E-Learning is more than simply taking a class online. Recent advances in hardware and software, combined with innovative approaches in learning theory, allow us to offer a completely different type of educational experience than the typical online course. Most online courses require simply reading information and taking multiple-choice tests. This style of course is not effective for providing advanced education, such as the type of learning and clinical reasoning applied in orthopedic massage. The developmental process and learning activities used in our e-learning program provide a far superior learning experience and allow more effective outcomes.

Weekend workshop or e-Learning?

Get more for your money and time. There are serious limitations to the level of in-depth training that can be accomplished in a weekend workshop. Just the amount of information can be overwhelming, making it hard for students to retain much of what they have learned. E-Learning allows you to take your time integrating material and skills. In addition, students can start and stop at different points to practice or review. There will always be a role for the workshop, however, and we will continue to offer a hands-on element. E-learning is not for everyone, but many people find it an exceptional way to enhance their professional knowledge and skills. The University of Illinois has put together a brief information page that helps you determine if you would be well-suited to the e-learning environment.

How does the course work?

It’s easy! There are three regionally focused segments: back, neck & pelvis; lower extremity; and upper extremity. Participants take the course over a 6-week period, but at times during the week convenient to them. Optional contact with classmates is maintained by Internet discussion boards. Instead of being overloaded with large amounts of lecture material that you are told to memorize, the major learning activities are structured around problem solving approaches. This allows you to immediately integrate the things you are learning within your clinical practice.

Do I have to be online at a certain time of day?

No. All learning activities are asynchronous–meaning you can study on the day and times best for you. You can work on the program when you are most attentive, interested, and most receptive for the learning activities.

Massage is more of a hands-on skill. How can you teach that with the computer?

Very well! Whitney’s orthopedic massage system is a comprehensive rehabilitative science. His courses emphasize clinical reasoning and application rather than rote memorization of exact routines or techniques. E-Learning fits our educational approach because participants are provided even more detail and instruction in the more advanced and complex assessment and treatment protocols that make up our orthopedic massage education.

Success working with clients who require more than stress-relief massage, requires the therapist be able to evaluate common conditions, analyze biomechanical factors, and make complex decisions regarding assessment and treatment. These are skills that are very effectively taught with properly developed computer learning strategies. There are some things that still work best with a face-to-face meeting in the classroom, but there are also things that will work better in the e-learning format. We maximize the student experience so you get the very best possible training available in this format.

Do I have to know a lot about computers?

No. You don’t have to know a lot about computers to do this program. It is user-friendly and simple. Help will be available for questions about the software or interactive activities.

Will I be able to interact with other students?

Yes, if you choose to. Interaction with other students is an important part of the learning process and one of the great experiences about being in a workshop. In most online training programs you are working alone. In this course there are numerous opportunities to interact with other students and with your instructor. Some students may be from your geographical area, but this program has students from all over the country and outside the U.S. as well, so it is a fascinating way to explore dynamics and education in massage therapy with many others.

Is there a way to ask questions while in the midst of the program?

Absolutely. Another unique feature of this program is that Whitney is directly involved in all the online course activities. You can always reach him to get clarification about assignments or ask questions about the material you are working on. Previous students have remarked that this is one of the greatest aspects of the course (an opportunity you won’t get in any other type of classroom format). Also, by working extensively with other students you can ask questions, hold discussions, and learn a great deal from your fellow classmates.

What if I have already taken some of the certification program courses, but am not finished?

More options! The new program design allows you to complete your certification with the e-Learning option or finish with one of the hands-on workshop courses.

What does the course cost?

The program is even more affordable than traditional workshops! Without travel costs and time away from work the cost (Spring special is $275) is considerably lower than our workshop courses. If you look at the amount of instructional time in this course (40 CE hours) compared to other workshops, you see that its cost is a great value!

What do other students say about the course?

Read testimonials from previous students.
